Sports Authority of India employees raise Rs 76 lakh for PM-CARES Fund by donating salaries to fight Covid-19

ports Authority of India (SAI) employees have raised Rs 76 lakh by donating part of their salaries to help the Indian government fight the battle against the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the news on social media as he posted a passbook which showed the transfer debit of Rs 76 lakh.

The amount will be donated to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund or PM-CARES Fund, which was announced on Saturday by Narendra Modi to fight the coronavirus padnemic.

“I feel honoured to share that employees of Sports Authority of India have come forward to donate 3 days salary of Group A, 2 days of group B & 1 day of all other employees to #PMCARES fund to fight coronavirus. The total amount is 76 lakhs,” Rijiju posted on his social media handles.

The Sports Minister himself has made significant contributions to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, which has infected over 1200 people in India and caused 35 deaths as of 8PM on March 30, 2020.

Rijiju himself has donated one month’s salary over and above PM Modi’s directive to all BJP MPs to contribute Rs 1 crore from MPLAD funds in the country’s fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Sports figures from all over the country have joined the fight against the deadly virus with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli, Sania Mirza, Hima Das, etc making monetary contributions over the last few days.

Tendulkar and Ganguly have donated Rs 50 lakh each while Suresh Raina has pledged Rs 52 lakh. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a donation of Rs 51 crore on Sunday.

Sania Mirza meanwhile, provided food to thousands of families and raised Rs 1.25 crore in one week which will help close to 1 lakh people.

Six-time world boxing champion and Rajya Sabha MP Mary Kom has donated her one month’s salary, amounting to Rs 1 lakh, while ace sprinter Hima Das has also decided to donate a month’s salary.
